What is Unlearn

Unlearn is your ability to intentionally let go of knowledge, beliefs, or ways of working that once served you but no longer fit, so you can reassess with fresh eyes. It usually starts with an uncomfortable recognition: what you are doing is not working anymore. Acting on that takes courage, self-awareness, and the humility to accept that a belief or habit that helped you before may now be holding you back.

Here is what makes it different from a preference like Motivation Style. Unlearn is an Ability, one of the change muscles in AQ that you can actively train. The aim is not to let go of everything, but to notice what has quietly stopped working and to release it on purpose, while keeping the judgement you have earned.

The idea has been shaped in business by Barry O'Reilly, whose work on unlearning past success gives the concept its modern language. AQ takes that idea and measures how readily you do it when real change lands, rather than in theory.

Unlearning is not forgetting

This is the most common misread. Unlearning does not mean wiping out what you know or throwing away hard-won expertise. It means consciously setting aside a model that no longer fits, so it stops running you on autopilot. You can always pick a tool back up when it is the right one. Unlearning is about choosing, not erasing.

Unlearning is not admitting you were wrong

A second easy mix-up is to hear unlearning as a confession of failure. Letting go of an approach that worked before is not the same as saying it was always a mistake. It was often right for its time. Five ways to build your ability to Unlearn

1. Notice what is not working. Ask where you are falling short of your own expectations, or not getting the outcome you want, then name the specific belief or habit in play. You cannot let go of something you have not spotted.
2. Separate the outcome from the method. Define what success would look like if the challenge were dissolved, then split the goal you care about from the way you have always chased it. You are letting go of the how, not the what.
3. Make a kill list. Pick three things to stop doing for the next fourteen days. Keep them small, specific, and reversible, then watch what actually breaks. It is usually less than you feared.
4. Choose courage over comfort. Unlearning means acting before you feel fully ready. Put yourself in one situation slightly outside your control, and make a plan to succeed in it rather than avoid it.
5. Think big, start small, then scale. Treat unlearning as a loop, not a one-off. Run a small experiment, keep what works, and repeat. Momentum comes from cycles, not a single leap.

When holding on is the right call

If your default is to let go quickly and chase the new, your growth may run the other way. Not every established practice is outdated. Some are load-bearing, and dropping them causes real harm. Before you unlearn something, check that it has genuinely stopped serving the outcome, rather than simply feeling familiar or dull. Novelty is not the same as improvement, and discernment is what turns unlearning from churn into progress.

Working with someone whose style is different

A lot of friction is not about who is right. It is a fast unlearner and someone who values continuity reading the same change differently. One sees the outdated model and wants to drop it; the other sees the risk of throwing away what works. Both are protecting something real, relevance on one side and reliability on the other. Name it first, so it stops feeling personal. Then translate: with a continuity-minded colleague, show what you are keeping and how the change protects the outcome; with a fast unlearner, acknowledge what is genuinely worth letting go before you defend what should stay. Use the difference as a check rather than a fight.

Exercise: the Cycle of Unlearning for teams

For team leaders, adapted from Barry O'Reilly's Unlearn Canvas. You can make unlearning a shared habit rather than a crisis response.

• Surface the sacred cows. Ask the team what you do here mainly because you have always done it. List them without judgement.
• Separate outcome from method. For each one, name the outcome it is meant to deliver, then ask honestly whether the method still delivers it.
• Run a fourteen-day kill list. Pick one or two practices to pause, agree how you will tell if anything important breaks, and review together.
• Keep, drop, or evolve. Decide what to restore, retire, or rebuild. Make the cycle routine, so unlearning happens before a crisis forces it.
